Hospital Operations Toolkit for COVID-19

This toolkit was designed as a single source of information for hospital emergency managers and planners preparing to manage large numbers of patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. Some information may be applicable to other hospital personnel and non-hospital settings. The toolkit is comprised of four primary sections and covers considerations from before patients arrive at a hospital to after they are discharged and is designed for users to easily navigate to desired information.

Minority Health SVI

US Department of Health and Human Services offices of Minority Health

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Minority Health developed the Minority Health Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) to enhance existing resources to support the identification of racial and ethnic minority communities at greatest risk for disproportionate impact and adverse outcomes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Given evidence on common factors contributing to social vulnerability, the MH SVI could potentially be applied to other public health emergencies.

Antibiotics represent the greatest risk factor for the development of CDI. While appropriate for treatment of many infectious diseases, antibiotics are often overused and misused. Antibiotics disturb normal bowel flora and place the patient at risk of acquiring Clostridioides difficile colonization and/or infection. Antibiotic Stewardship Programs (ASP) have been shown to be an integral part of a CDI reduction program.

The purpose of this toolkit is help facilities incorporate evidence-based research into their practices and measure their effectiveness. Process and outcome measures will be collected and trended.

Training and the Culture of Learning: Health Equity Resource Series

American Hospital Association (AHA) Institute for Diversity and Health Equity (IFDHE)

To support hospitals and health systems starting from different points on their journey to achieve health equity, the AHA’s Institute for Diversity and Health Equity (IFDHE) is releasing a series of toolkits to share evidence-based practices to inform organizational next steps for the following topics:

  • Data collection, validation, stratification and application of patient information to address disparate outcomes
  • Cultural humility and implicit bias training and education
  • Diversity and inclusion in leadership and governance roles
  • Sustainable community partnerships focused on improving equity

Each toolkit is designed to be informative, whether organizations have already deployed health equity tactics and strategies or if they are at the early stages of implementation. Each helps lay the groundwork for an in-development equity roadmap to support hospitals’ and health systems’ efforts toward achieving high-quality, equitable care for all. This toolkit focuses on training and education strategies and approaches to encourage cultural humility and overcome implicit bias.

Managing Acute Respiratory Failure in Small, Rural, and Critical Access Hospitals: Non-Invasive Ventilation & High-Flow Nasal Cannula

Due to medical-surgical nurses’ limited exposure to managing acute respiratory failure, nurses in rural and critical access hospitals do not always have a comfort level with non-invasive ventilation (NIV) equipment and/or High-Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC). Managing this situation on medical-surgical floors within these smaller hospitals created a void, especially without access to specialty staff who have advanced clinical respiratory experience, lack of critical care beds, and/or the lack of respiratory therapy resources. This is especially true in rural and critical access hospitals, possibly exacerbating adverse events and potentially increasing health disparities (due to access of specialty care issues). This electronic tool provides digestible information to support the front-line in CPAP, BiPAP, and HFNC management.
